Patrolman Claude McCormick
Oakwood Police Department
August 29, 1933
On August 28th, 1933, Oakwood Police Patrolman Claude McCormick was on patrol when he suffered critical injuries in a vehicle crash.
He was responding to a call when his motorcycle’s tires got caught up in some streetcar rails, and it skidded and overturned. As a result, he was thrown from the cycle and his head struck the pavement. Afterwards—exhibiting only a small cut to the forehead—he reported to his headquarters where he received first aid. But at that time his condition was deemed not to be serious, so he was sent home to rest. Just a few hours later, he lapsed into unconsciousness.
Claude died of his injuries the next day, on August 29th, 1933.
Patrolman McCormick was 38 years old at the time of his death and had served with the Oakwood Police Department for four years. He was survived by his wife and mother.
Claude was a U.S. Army World War I veteran.
