Detective George V. Purcell
Dayton Police Department
September 23, 1916

On September 23rd, 1916, Dayton Police Detective George V. Purcell was on an undercover assignment when he suffered critical injuries from getting stabbed and shot.

While working a surveillance operation, he had entered a saloon to arrest a suspect—reported to have been brandishing a handgun—who he had soon located and led outside without incident. But just as they reached the sidewalk, the suspect suddenly turned, pulled a knife and stabbed Detective Purcell in the chest. He fell, but that’s when the suspect drew a handgun and shot Purcell in the abdomen before fleeing the scene.

George died of his injuries at the scene. A massive manhunt led to an arrest, but it proved to be the wrong man. The killer was never captured.

Detective Purcell was 40 years old at the time of his death, and had served with the Dayton Police Department for 13 years. He was survived by his wife and two sons.

George was known for his genial temperament and conscientious manner, and for having effectively discharged whatever duties he was assigned. He was considered an exemplary and compassionate officer who, over time, had helped many men stay out of trouble.
